Marblehead Sail Bags
How a scrap of sailcloth and a lot of curiosity became a one-woman brand on the Massachusetts North Shore.
I grew up on the water. My parents' house, the yacht clubs in Marblehead, my dad's boat, the beach – that was just my world. I started racing at eleven and never really stopped.
After college I went to work at a local sail loft in purchasing, where I got to know the sailcloth vendors and the materials really well. I also watched beautiful scraps come off the cutting machine every single day and go straight into the trash. I hated the thought of wasting all of that material, so one day I took some home and figured out how to make a wallet. And then a second wallet.
I still have both (pictured above). Honestly, those wallets changed everything – because when it worked, I was hooked. I loved taking a piece of cloth and turning it into something real. A tote bag came next. Then a bigger one. And then, without really planning it, a brand.
Every bag starts with something I've seen and loved, or thought I could do better. I sketch the final dimensions first, then work backwards from there. I want the finished piece to look like nothing else you own, hold up to whatever you throw at it, and still surprise you a little. My favorite moment in the whole process is flipping the bag right side out at the end – that's when it becomes real.
This started with a scrap of cloth and a lot of creativity and curiosity, but I couldn't have planned the rest. What I didn't expect was how this would give back to me. It's kept me connected to Marblehead, brought back people from my past in the best way, and introduced me to people I never would have met otherwise – sailors, artists, and the best customers – and for that, I'm really grateful.
